Environment, Biodiversity and Climate Change
Biodiversity is a cornerstone for life on Earth
and sustainable development including clean water, clean air, food
and medicine. In the last several years, we have witnessed a vast
decrease in biodiversity in which habitats and species are becoming
extinct at an alarming rate. This rapid decline has a direct implication
on global warming and climate change including helping to mitigate
the release of greenhouse gases.
Even more, most of the world’s populations,
those who live on a mere few dollars a day, rely on biodiversity
for their everyday needs and livelihoods.
“At least 40 per cent of the world’s economy
and 80 per cent of the needs of the poor are derived from biological
resources. In addition, the richer the diversity of life, the greater
the opportunity for medical discoveries, economic development, and
adaptive responses to such new challenges as climate change.”
– Convention on Biodiversity
The Pacific Foundation is committed to supporting
organizations that are addressing the challenges of Biodiversity
and Climate Change and creating an increasing awareness of these
issues.
Our goals and intended impact are as follows:
Goals:
- To increase biodiversity through the support of
local nurseries and reforestation programs; and
- To increase awareness and changed behavior towards
issues on the environment through new media models.
Intended impact:
- Increased growth in local biodiversity programs
including nurseries, reforestation programs;
- Research/ reports that study how communications
(including new media messaging) impact broad audiences’
attitude towards issues of biodiversity and climate change; and
- In-depth research conducted on how targeted messaging
(using new media) can impact behavior change around issues of
biodiversity and climate change.
